Diante da crescente complexização da ordem geopolítica global contemporânea, a ascensão internacional do Brasil na primeira década do século XXI suscitou numerosos debates sobre a questão da liderança regional sul-americana. Neste trabalho, analisa-se a suposição majoritária de que o Brasil constitui o líder regional hegemônico por excelência na América do Sul, que contaria com a aquiescência dos demais países da região. Para além do clássico equilíbrio de poder entre os Estados, a preocupação com o exercício da liderança regional está nitidamente subordinada às geoestratégias dos Estados, as quais refletem suas relações de poder, e às estratégias de cunho geral para os territórios nacionais e estrangeiros. Tendo a geopolítica como substrato para o entendimento da política internacional na América do Sul, à luz das relações históricas de dependência e subordinação entre seus atores políticos, suas rivalidades e seus temores quanto a pretensões hegemônicas, busca-se identificar a perspectiva dos países da América do Sul no que se refere à sua visão geopolítica e de política externa quanto a sua expectativa de busca de autonomia e projeção internacional. Por fim, pondera-se sobre se a existência de um ou mais líderes regionais é oportuna ou perniciosa para o fortalecimento do processo de integração sul-americano.

In the face of the growing complexity of the contemporary global geopolitical order, Brazil's international rise in the first decade of the twenty-first century has sparked numerous debates on the South American regional leadership. In this work, we analyze the majority assumption that Brazil constitutes the regional hegemonic leader par excellence in South America, which would have the acquiescence of the other countries in the region. In addition to the classic interstate balance of power, the concern with the exercise of regional leadership is clearly subordinated to the geostrategies of states, which reflect their power relations, and to general strategies for national and foreign territories. Applying geopolitical studies as a substrate for understanding South American international politics in the light of the historical relations of dependence and subordination between political actors, their rivalries and their fears about hegemonic pretensions, we aim at identifying the perspective of South American countries with regard to its geopolitical and foreign policy view regarding its expectation of seeking autonomy and international projection. Finally, we considered whether the existence of one or more regional leaders is opportune or pernicious for the strengthening of the South American integration process.
