A presente dissertação faz uma análise sobre a relação entre as origens e o desenvolvimento do ensino superior e o processo de formação sócio-territorial no Brasil. Tal análise contempla três macros períodos, percorrendo um percurso temporal que vai desde a colonização (séculos XVI, XVII e XVIII) passando pelo Brasil imperial e República Velha (séculos XIX e XX) chegando em meados do século XX a partir dos desdobramentos da Revolução de 1930. Em cada um desses períodos a relação entre o ensino superior e a formação sócio-territorial se deu à sua maneira, isto é, obedecendo a sociabilidade vigente e as condições históricas pré-definidas. Assim, temos a propagação do ensino religioso dos colégios jesuítas e sua relação com o processo de formação do território colonial e a definição dos pressupostos da sociedade colonial; a institucionalização do ensino superior por meio dos institutos de ensino superior isolados e a cultura do bacharelismo enquanto prestígio social e sua relação com os pressupostos da criação do Estado nacional brasileiro; a criação e a propagação de um modelo de universidade moderna no Brasil - as universidades federais - e sua relação com o processo de reprodução do capital no território brasileiro. Esses três momentos desencadeiam uma sequência de acontecimentos que no seu conjunto representam a evolução das etapas de formação, consolidação e expansão do modo de produção capitalista no país e ajudam a contextualizar social e historicamente a evolução do sistema de ensino superior.

This dissertation analyzes the relationship between the origins and development of higher education and the process of socio-territorial formation in Brazil. Such an analysis contemplates three macroperiods, traversing a temporal path that goes from colonization (16th, 17th and 18th centuries) through imperial Brazil and the Old Republic (19th and 20th centuries) arriving in the middle of the 20th century from the beginning of the 1930 Revolution In each of these periods, the relationship between higher education and socio-territorial formation took place in its own way, that is, obeying the prevailing sociability and the pre-defined historical conditions. Thus, we have the strength of the religious teaching of the Jesuit schools and its relation with the process of formation of the colonial territory and the definition of the contracts of the colonial society; the institutionalization of higher education through isolated higher education institutes and the bachelor's culture as social prestige and its relationship with the precepts of the creation of the Brazilian national State; the creation and influence of a modern university model in Brazil - the federal universities - and their relationship with the process of reproduction of capital in the Brazilian territory. These three moments trigger a sequence of events that, as a whole, represent the evolution of the stages of formation, consolidation and expansion of the capitalist mode of production in the country and help to socially and historically contextualize the evolution of the higher education system.
