A agricultura urbana, embora ameaçada pela urbanização, dificilmente desaparece por completo. Isto se deve não apenas às materialidades remanescentes e à necessidade de estar junto ao mercado consumidor, mas também à diversidade de formas e expressões que a caracteriza. Os diferentes contextos e a multiplicidade de atores evidenciam dinâmicas e funções de uma atividade que é híbrida e plural. Esta tese volta-se à expressão ativista da agricultura urbana, revelada por materializações alternativas que pretendem rediscutir a cidade, por exemplo, mediante reapropriação dos espaços públicos, reconexão com os ciclos da natureza e estreitamento dos vínculos sociais. A partir desta "agricultura urbana como ativismo", pode-se desenvolver novas análises e interpretações referentes aos processos de (re)produção e transformação do espaço urbano, avançar na construção conceitual acerca da agricultura urbana enquanto prática social e ampliar a reflexão sobre o direito à cidade. O recorte principal desta tese são áreas intra-urbanas de Paris e de São Paulo, com destaque às hortas comunitárias, que não são analisadas isoladamente da organização espacial que as cria. Recorre-se a procedimentos metodológicos da pesquisa-ação e, para a análise das transformações espaciais em distintos contextos (representados por aquelas duas metrópoles), são consideradas: ações do poder público, realçando políticas e programas específicos; iniciativas profissionais; materializações urbanísticas atuais (temporárias ou permanentes); e apropriações de práticas e discursos alternativos pelo capital, adentrando no campo das contradições existentes nos processos em curso. Contrasta-se, assim, o conteúdo político de um novo mercado atrelado à (re)produção do urbano com o da agricultura urbana como ativismo, cujas utopias orientam o fortalecimento de relações mais libertárias de organização material do espaço.

It is highly unlikely that urban agriculture, despite being threatened by urbanization, disappears completely. That is true not only because of the remaining materialities and the need to be close to the consumer market, but also because of the myriad of forms and expressions that are peculiar to it. The various contexts and multiple actors involved reveal dynamics and functions of a hybrid, plural activity. This thesis focuses on the activist expression of urban agriculture, revealed by alternative materializations aimed at shedding a new light on the role of the city, for instance, with regard to taking back public spaces, reconnecting with natural cycles, and strengthening social bonds. Based on this "urban agriculture as activism", one may come up with new analyses and interpretations related to urban space (re)production and transformation processes, further develop the concept of urban agriculture as a social practice, and elaborate on insights about the right to the city. This thesis will focus mainly on the intra-urban areas of Paris and São Paulo, especially community gardens, which will not be analyzed separately from the spatial organization that creates them. I will use action research methodology and, to analyze the spatial transformation in different contexts (represented by the two cities), the following factors are taken into account: actions taken by governments, highlighting specific policies and programs; professional initiatives; current urban materializations (temporary or permanent); and appropriation of alternative practices and discourses by the capital, also addressing the contradictions observed in current processes. Thus, we will see a contrast between the political content of a new market regarding the urban (re)production and those of urban agriculture as activism, whose utopias aim to strengthen more libertarian relationships regarding the material organization of space.
