Oranges pickers in São Paulo industries, Brazil

Rural labour
Abstract in English
The labour relationships among citrus industries, worker contractors and pick temporary workers were studied in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1994. The study hypothesis was that the orange pickers were real laborers of the citrus industries (in the sense that they were formally contracted). In order to obtain the pickers profile, questionnaries were applied to a census survey of the companies and to probabilistic sample surveys of contractors and workers. The main hypothesis has been confirmed by the research results. However, in the later years the labour relationships changed from a industry-contractor and industry-worker contract system to a industry-labour cooperative-worker contract system
