Ecosystem Provisioning Services: Water Resources in Urbanized and Non-Urbanized areas of São Sebastião Island, São Paulo

Water Shortage
Abstract in English
The Island of São Sebastião faces serious problems when it comes to accessing ecosystem services related to water provisioning. The lack of coverage in basic sanitation services, the increase in the floating population during the summer, and the discharge of untreated sewage into rivers and streams have posed challenges for water supply management and the quality of water resources. The present study aimed to analyze the access and conditions of use of the Ecosystem Service of Water Provision through a documentary study supported by thematic content analysis, along with the analysis of census data, subsequently corroborated by an interview with a qualified informant from the urban planning sector. It was concluded that an integrated approach to physical, social, and economic aspects facilitates the understanding of conflicts of interest affecting the exploitation and distribution of water resources on São Sebastião Island. The island, located on the northern coast of São Paulo, has relative water availability linked to its relief structures and climatic conditions, but a portion of its population is affected by managerial scarcity, resulting from direct alternative water withdrawals from watercourses, lack of sewage treatment, and activities exceeding the capacity for river production and self-purification.
