Este trabalho busca compreender o universo da pesca no Pantanal do Mato Grosso do Sul, a partir dos municípios de Miranda e Corumbá (na localidade de Porto da Manga), abordando a relação entre pescadores profissionais e turistas que, a partir do final da década de 1970, começam a afluir em número significativo para a região, incentivando a implantação de infra-estrutura hoteleira e de serviços e o surgimento de novas frentes de trabalho juntos aos rios e lagoas pantaneiros. O objetivo deste estudo é verificar de que forma a presença do turismo, em sua modalidade da pesca esportiva, tem interferido na vida da população local, seja no que se refere às relações sociais, seja na maneira do trabalhador local lidar com o ambiente ou no modo de produzir sua existência. Tendo como enfoque básico os coletores de "iscas vivas", uma nova categoria de trabalhadores que se constitui a partir do turismo pesqueiro, constituindo-se de pescadores que capturam pequenos peixes e crustáceos para servirem de iscas na pesca esportiva, o estudo procura abordar o significado social e cultural do turismo na vida desses indivíduos, o modo como se inserem no mercado, as técnicas de trabalho e a sua constituição como categoria profissional e como grupo social detentor de identidade própria. Mesmo buscando revelar as contradições que subjazem à presença do empreendimento turístico no Pantanal - a atividade, ao mesmo tempo em que permite algumas melhorias nas condições de vida da população ribeirinha e que começa a incentivar a conservação da natureza, promove a exclusão social e a degradação do ambiente -, este trabalho parte do pressuposto de que existem meios de se implantar nos rios da região atividades turísticas sustentáveis, ou seja, coerentes com as demandas sociais da população local e atentas às necessidades de conservação dos distintos ecossistemas pantaneiros

This work searches for understanding the fishing universe in the Pantanal in South Mato Grosso, from the cities of Miranda and Corumbá ( at the locality of Porto da Manga), dealing with the relation between the professional fishermen and the tourists who, since the end of the 70´s, have started to flow in significant number to the region, stimulating the introduction of hotel infrastructure, the services and the emerging of new labor front next to the rivers and puddles in the Pantanal. This study aims to verify how the presence of the tourism, like sports fishing, has interfered in the local population life, referring to the social relations, how the local workman deal with the environment or the way he produces his existence. Having as basic focus the alive fishing bait catchers, a new class of workers that set up from the fishing tourism, formed by fishermen who capture small fish and crustaceous to be used as alive bait in sports fishing. The research intends to show the social and cultural meaning of tourism into these individuals lives, the way they enter on the market, their work technique and their identification as professional category and social group possessor of their own identity. Even trying to reveal the contradictions brought by the presence of the touristic enterprises in the Pantanal - the activity, at the same time that allows some improvements in the condition of the riverside population life and that starts to encourage the nature preservation, can also promote the social exclusion and the environment degradation -, this work proceeds from the presupposition that there are ways of instilling in the rivers of the region, sustainable touristic activities, in other words, activities which are coherent with the population social demands and alert to the necessity of the preservation of the distinct ecossistem in the Pantanal
