Abstract in English
This doctoral thesis examines the activities of evangelical missions (denominational and "faith missions") among indigenous groups located in the Brazilian state of Amapá: specifically, the Karipuna, Galibi-Marworno and Palikur - located in the Oiapoque region, along the border between Brazil and French Guyana - and the Waiãpi - located in self-named territory in Amapá's mid-west. The objective of this work is to comprehend the symbolic and material mechanisms activated by evangelists in the process of cultural translation from Christianity. My analysis is centred on missionary activity carried out by the fundamentalist segment. The mission, as a frontier situation, is a convenient setting in which to analyse the processes of translation operating on the linguistic, ritual and behavioural planes. I conclude that in this social interaction, the reception to evangelical fundamentalism varies and inflects, on different leves, on the evangelical religiosity itself
