Este estudo é uma etnografia do processo de formação da alteridade tumbalalá dentro da rede histórica de comunicação interétnica do sub-médio São Francisco. Esta comunidade de identidade indígena é atualmente formada por menos de 200 famílias e está situada no extremo Norte do estado da Bahia, região que guarda forte memória das missões que lá existiram até meados do século XVIII. A investigação é voltada para as diversas maneiras pelas quais as famílias que compõem a comunidade tumbalalá se situam frente a uma mesma identidade tendo por base, principalmente, suas distintas experiências nos circuitos regionais de trocas políticas e rituais. Dentro deste horizonte, o toré é o espaço principal onde os tumbalalá transformam a diversidade e heterogeneidade das trajetórias de famílias e indivíduos numa unidade contextual capaz de sustentar fronteiras sociais e simbólicas em relação aos outros. O trabalho pretende contribuir para o entendimento da etnogênese tumbalalá como um processo situado na história da região e facilitado pela presença de um campo multi institucional onde atuam diversos agentes e agências de apoio

This study is an ethnography of the tumbalalá's alterity building process in a historical network of interethnic communication in the sub-medium San Francisco river. This community of indian identity currently is formed by less than 200 families and it's situated in the North of the Bahia state, in a region that keeps a strong memory of the missions that had existed there until the mid-eighteenth century. The inquiry is directed to the diverse ways for which the families who compose the community tumbalalá point out face to one same identity having for base, mainly, its distinct experiences in the regional circuits of swaps politics and rituals. In this hand, toré is the main space where tumbalalá transforms the diversity and heterogeneinity of the paths of families and individuals into a contextual unit capable to support social and symbolic boundaries in face to the others. The work intends to contribute for the agreement of the tumbalalá's ethnogenesis as a process situated in the regional history and facilitated by the presence of a multi-institucional field where many agents and agencies of aid act
