A relação entre os papéis desempenhados pela razão e pelo sentimento na teoria moral de Hume é um tema bastante controverso. Ainda que boa parte dos comentadores, especialmente os mais recentes, tenha se dedicado a essa questão, existem alguns pontos que permanecem obscuros.O que pretendo, ao longo deste trabalho, é mostrar que tanto a razão quanto o sentimento têm papéis de grande relevância na moral humiana: ora, o filósofo afirma explicitamente que, ainda que o fundamento da moral esteja em um sentimento ou sentido interno, só podemos ser tocados pelo sentimento exato de censura ou aprovação depois de reconhecer a utilidade de um certo ato, o que é uma tarefa inegavelmente da razão. Ainda assim, o papel que ele atribui à razão implica justamente uma adesão à corrente que, mais tarde, convencionou-se chamar sentimentalismo moral. Investigarei também de que modo razão e sentimento colaboram para a origem e para o processo de desenvolvimento da moralidade, tentando mostrar com clareza que Hume tira a força normativa da moralidade justamente de uma base não-moral, e que isso é uma das principais vantagens que o autor tem sobre o ceticismo moral. Por fim, tratarei de expor, de maneira muito breve, a moral humiana como resultado de um projeto maior de filosofia que leva em consideração a relação da filosofia com o vulgo. Do modo como vejo, isso pode jogar mais algumas luzes sobre a moral humiana. Vale lembrar que todos esses aspectos serão investigados levando-se em conta a maneira como Hume se insere no debate sobre os fundamentos da moral que ocupou parte tão grande dos pensadores das luzes britânicas

The relation between the roles played by reason and sentiment in Hume's moral theory is a quite controversial subject. Even though it has been examined by many scholars, specially the more recent ones, some points of this question still have to be better explained. I intend, along this work, to establish that reason and sentiment both have roles of great importance in Hume's moral theory: though the philosopher states that the foundation of moral is an internal sentiment or sense, we can only have the appropriate feeling of approbation or blame after we recognize the utility of a certain act, and that's undeniably a task of reason. Even so, the role he attributes to reason shows his allegiance to what we have of late called moral sentimentalism. I will also inquire on the way reason and sentiment contribute to the origin and the development of morality, trying to show clearly that Hume derives the normative force of morality from a non-moral basis, and it constitutes one of the author's greatest advantages against mora skepticism. At last, I'll try to expose, in a very brief manner, Hume's moral theory as a part of a bigger philosophical project wich always takes into account the relations between philosophy and the vulgar. The way I see, it might help to clear some aspects of humean morals.We should keep in mind that all these subjects will be approached taking into account teh way Hum takes part in the debate concerning the foundations of morals, which has drawed the attention o many philosophers of the British enlightenment
