Abstract in English
The subject of this study is the virtù of the people as described in the political and historical works of Machiavelli. The term virtù is usuallly associated to the figure of the Prince, but the qualities that make possible the accomplishment of virtuous actions can also be found in several other agents, v.g., the popolo, the nation, the army etc. There are two meanings to the world popolo in the writings of Machavelli. The most extensive is that of civitas, or the society as a whole, but we can also understand people as a specific social group, as opposed to the grandi. The popolo and the grandi are not strictly defined in economic or in social terms. Both groups are conceived as conflicting political actors and their members may vary accordind to different historical circumstances. This study, we hope, can be read as a contribution to the understandig of machavellian republicanism.
