Abstract in English
At the beginning of Chapter 2 of EE VII (1235b13-18), Aristotle says that the adequate account of friendship satisfies certain criteria. My primary aim in this dissertation is to determine if these may be considered methodological criteria of general application in EE VII. In order to accomplish this aim, I present a detailed examination of the content of 1235b13-18 and of the manner by which Aristotle satisfies the criteria of the adequate account of friendship. Because of the fact that the premises of his account seem to be made acceptable by the fact that they (i) incorporate most of what is said/know about friendship (ii) in a non-contradictory way, Aristotle may be said to present a coherentist's argument for his account of friendship. Having done this, I seek to verify the general character of this strategy, whereby I examine two other arguments in book VII. I conclude that Aristotle's argumentative strategy at the beginning of Chapter 2 is of limited application in book VII itself.
