Nosso interesse é mostrar como as relações entre o psíquico e o físico podem compreendidas na teoria freudiana do aparelho psíquico tal como esta é formulada no capítulo VII de A Interpretação dos Sonhos (1900). Para tanto, usamos dois principais recursos. Em primeiro lugar, lançamos mão de uma retrospectiva das formas embrionárias desse aparelho nos textos pré-psicanalíticos Para uma Concepção das Afasias (1891) e Projeto de uma Psicologia (1895). Em segundo lugar e com maior detalhamento, tomamos como parâmetro algumas das discussões recentes da filosofia da mente em torno da questão mente-corpo e, mais especificamente, concentramo-nos no conceito de representação mental e no tratamento que este recebe dentro do conexionismo, uma das correntes da Ciência Cognitiva. Uma comparação entre Freud e o conexionismo no que diz respeito à representação serve como base para a comparação mais ampla entre as duas partes no que se refere à questão mente-corpo

Our aim is to show how the relations between the mental and the physical can be understood in the theory of the psychic apparatus as Sigmund Freud states it in the seventh chapter of his The Interpretation of Dreams. To do it, we follow two routes. At first, we look back into the primitive forms of that apparatus in the pre-psychoanalytical texts On Aphasia and Project for a Psychology. Second and foremost, we try to raise some of the main points discussed by contemporary philosophers of mind concerning the mind-body problem. A special focus is on the concept of mental representation presented by connectionism, one of the schools of Cognitive Science. Comparing Freud's concept of representation to the connectionist one is eventually taken as the basis on which a broader comparison concerning mind-body matters is made
