Julgar a república: história e filosofia política no Methodus de Jean Bodin

Soberania

Abstract in English
This thesis intends to demonstrate that Jean Bodin's theory of sovereignty presented in the Methodus ad facilem historiarum cognitionem (1566) fulfills the demands of a methodical judgement of the concept of republic, and is opposed to and criticizes the principles of the Italian republicanism. Differently from the approaches to Bodins's political thought that consider the text of 1566 an anticipation and a summary of the theory of sovereignty presented in the Six livres de la République (1576), this thesis intends to show that the effort to create a method for the knowledge of history led Bodin to the political philosophy or the civilis disciplina. This allowed the author to review the principles of the concept of republic by opposing them to Machiavelli's republican principles and the Venetian civil liberty. This opposition is necessary for Bodin's argument once his theory of sovereignty in the Methodus does not have its foundations in a philosophy of law
