Esta dissertação é constituída pela tradução comentada dos primeiros sete discursos (de um total de quinze), proferidos por Sir Joshua Reynolds como presidente da Royal Academy of Arts in London, de 1769 a 1790. Essa se colocava como um órgão oficial, definidor de padrões, destinado a treinar profissionais e a realizar exposições. O texto que serviu de base para a tradução foi a edição de Robert R. Wark, de 1997, que por sua vez utilizou a edição de 1797 revista pelo próprio Reynolds e que reúne todos os discursos e o restante de sua produção literária. Esse mesmo conjunto de sete discursos foi publicado pelo autor em 1778 e nele estão expostos os conceitos principais de sua doutrina das artes. Os discursos têm sido considerados um texto de referência para o estudo da pintura inglesa no século XVIII e um dos documentos mais relevantes na história da arte européia naquele século. Foram, durante a vida do autor, traduzidos para o italiano, o francês e o alemão e houve mais de 30 edições após sua morte. Os discursos foram preparados como palestras para estudantes, artistas e alguns convidados. As palestras eram voltadas para a formação do artista e nelas Reynolds tratava da importância da existência da Academia, do método de estudos, da hierarquia dos temas, da importância dos modelos antigos e de conceitos como gênio, gosto, natureza, belo ideal e imitação. Suas principais fontes literárias foram os escritos franceses e ingleses dos séculos XVII e XVIII, além de fontes consagradas como Vasari, Pseudo-Longino e Plínio

This work presents an annotated translation of the first seven discourses (from a total of fifteen), presented by Sir Joshua Reynolds as President of the Royal Academy of Arts in London, from 1769 to 1790. The Academy had the role of an official institution, definer of stantdads and with the purpose of training professionals and making exhibitions. The text that was used for the translation was Robert R. Wark`s edition, from 1997, that used an edition from 1797, revised by Reynolds himself, that groups all discourses and the rest of his literary production. This same group of seven discourses was published by the author in 1778 and it contents the leading concepts of his painting doctrine. The discourses have been considered a reference text for the study of English painting of the XVIII century and one of the most relevant documents of the European history of art from that century. They were, during the author`s life, translated to Italian, French and German, and there has been more than 30 editions since his death. The discourses were prepared as speeches for the students, academicians and a few guests. In the discourses Reynolds was concerned with the training of the young artist and his subjects were the importance of the existence of the Academy, study method, hierarchy of subjects, importance of ancient models and concepts as genius, taste, nature and imitation. His main literary sources were the English and French writings of the XVII and XVIII centuries and established sources as Vasari, Pseudo Longino and Pliny
