Produzida em 1861, a tela de Victor Meirelles de Lima A primeira missa no Brasil retoma a narrativa do descobrimento cristalizada na Carta do Achamento de Pero Vaz de Caminha, fornecendo ao relato quinhentista uma nova e poderosa imagem. Porém, essa imagem é também resultado de noções e ideias próprias do século XIX, como o nacionalismo e o colonialismo modernos, associadas à representação indígena que se desenvolve no Brasil até este período. A presente pesquisa busca analisar o modo como a tela A primeira missa no Brasil absorve as influências que chegaram ao artista, das representações indígenas desenvolvidas por portugueses e europeus ao longo da história do Brasil, bem como as noções modernas de nacionalismo e colonialismo presentes nas obras de artistas importantes para a formação de Meirelles, como Jacques-Louis David, Antoine-Jean Gros e Jean-Baptiste Debret. Por fim, a presente pesquisa busca avaliar como a tela de Meirelles articula essas influências no contexto político-social brasileiro de debates sobre a relações étnico-raciais na formação da identidade nacional brasileira

Produced in 1861, Victor Meirelles de Limas canvas A primeira missa no Brasil takes up the narrative of the discovery crystallized in the Carta do Achamento by Pero Vaz de Caminha, and provides the sixteenth century account with a new and powerful image. However, this image is also the result of notions and ideas typical of the nineteenth century, such as nationalism and modern colonialism, associated with the indigenous representation that developed in Brazil until this period. The present research seeks to analyze how the canvas A primeira missa no Brasil absorbs such influences, from the indigenous representations developed by Portuguese and Europeans throughout the history of Brazil that reach the artist, and from the modern notions of nationalism and colonialism present in the works of important artists for the formation of Meirelles, such as Jacques-Louis David, Antoine-Jean Gros and Jean-Baptiste Debret. Finally, the present research seeks to evaluate how Meirelles canvas articulates these influences in the Brazilian political-social context, and the debates on ethnic-racial relations in the formation of Brazilian national identity
