Ao longo de sua obra, Descartes faz uma divisão entre, de um lado, ideia enquanto um modo de pensamento e, de outro, ideia dotada de realidade objetiva. Essa divisão aparece por mais de uma vez, porém, a mais explícita delas, do Prefácio ao leitor das Meditações sobre a filosofia primeira, é feita com a intenção de resolver um problema na filosofia de Descartes: como o sujeito limitado tem em si a ideia de um ser sumamente perfeito e infinito (Deus)? A partir desse problema, Descartes propõe a divisão da ideia em dois conceitos diferentes: de um lado, a palavra ideia é usada para referir-se à operação do intelecto, e nesse sentido ela não pode ser mais perfeita que o sujeito da qual é um modo; do outro lado, a palavra ideia também é usada para referir-se à coisa representada, e nesse sentido ela pode ser mais perfeita que o sujeito. Tendo isso em vista, o foco desta dissertação é analisar como essa divisão se sustenta ao longo de toda a obra de Descartes. Para isso, a análise estende-se em quatro pontos: primeiro, a análise da ideia como gênero, pois a ideia é um modo e/ou uma ação do pensamento; segundo, análise da realidade da ideia como modo do pensamento, isto é, da realidade formal da ideia; terceiro, análise da realidade objetiva da ideia e da possível independência entre a ideia dotada de realidade objetiva e ideia dotada de realidade formal; e, enfim, a análise da natureza da ideia, isto é, da função mais elementar e geral da ideia, que defendemos ser a função de percepção.

Throughout his work, Descartes makes a division between, on the one hand, the idea as a way of thinking and, on the other, an idea endowed with objective reality. This division appears more than once, however, the most explicit of them, from the Preface to the reader of the Meditations on First Philosophy, is made with the intention of solving a problem in Descartes' philosophy: how the limited subject has the idea within himself of a supremely perfect and infinite being (God)? Starting from this problem, Descartes proposes the division of the idea into two different concepts: on the one hand, the word idea is used to refer to the operation of the intellect, and in this sense it cannot be more perfect than the subject of which it is a mode; on the other hand, the word idea is also used to refer to the thing represented, and in that sense it can be more perfect than the subject. With that in mind, the focus of this dissertation is to analyze how this division is sustained throughout Descartes' work. For this, the analysis extends into four points: first, the analysis of the idea as a genre, since the idea is a mode and/or an action of thought; second, analysis of the reality of the idea as a way of thinking, that is, of the formal reality of the idea; third, analysis of the objective reality of the idea and the possible independence between the idea endowed with objective reality and the idea endowed with formal reality; and, finally, the analysis of the nature of the idea, that is, of the most elementary and general function of the idea, which we defend to be the function of perception.
