Abstract in English
The present research seeks to interpret the whole of the work of impressionist painter Édouard Manet from the perspective of female figuration. Considering the artist's relevance to the impressionist movement and the generation to which he belonged in 1863, this dissertation aims to address the frontality of the gaze of the female characters, related to the composition of the work and its reception. The theoretical reference is constituted by the readings of The Painting of Modern Life, by T.J.Clark ; Manet's Modernism, by Michael Fried; Michel Foucault's conference, Manet and the Object of Painting; Manet - Biographical and Critical Study, by Georges Bataille; Manet : A Symbolic Revolution, by Pierre Bourdieu, Suspensions of perception, by Jonathan Crary, among others. As a method of analysis, Manet's main works are studied, as well as those of other artists, with the purpose of thinking about them from their reception and what similarities and differences exist among them. Therefore, the objective of this research is to demonstrate the relevance of the pictorial configuration promoted by Manet through the frontality of the gaze of the female characters and the materiality of the canvas, as elements participating in the "Manet effect" and in what characterized his so-called "symbolic revolution", specifically enhanced by female figuration, distancing itself from academic norms.
