Abstract in English
This thesis deals with the transformations ocurred in fine arts, in Brazil, between the proclamation of the Republic (1889) and the Semana de Arte Moderna de 1922 (1922 Modern Art Week) by following up the artistic trajectory of the painter and historian Benedito Calixto de Jesus (Itanhaém, 1853; São Paulo, 1927). The research aims a revision on the current idea that art in that period was just a continuation of the academic models established by the extinguished Academia Imperial de Belas-Artes. At the same time that São Paulo was consolidating its position as one of the main markets for works of art, there were widespread changes in the themes, artists schooling, sources of founding, and general ways of aprehention of theartistic production. These changes were related to the emergence of a new class of "coffee barons" and industrialists, with their need to create a distinctive life-style through the consumption of simbolic goods that reflected their new social position and the range of social experiences derived from it
