Since the mid-1980s we have witnessed the emergence of some research traditions on the socioeconomic changes in the São Paulo Metropolitan Region (RMSP).According to one of those analytical perspectives, the metropolis is seen as one of the new spaces of modern services and one of the privileged regions to the global circuits of financial capital in such a way that the manufacturing sectors would perform only a minor role in the territorial economic dynamism. Therefore, the links between the RMSP and the new trends of globalization might be transforming the former into a post-industrial space in which the manufacturing sectors would have a little influence on the paths of regional development. In spite of undertaking their research under different theoretical and methodological assumptions, another cohort of scholars who have been studying the regional patterns of industrial dispersion in the state of São Paulo have pointed out the formation of new industrial spaces in the state as territorial alternatives to the decline of the metropolitan productive structure which is caused, in turn, by the undermining of its industrial agglomeration economies. In few words, the two research traditions brought about above argue that the metropolitan space is not an industrial space anymore.Following an alternative analytical route, I shall argue that the metropolitan manufacturing sectors have still acted as central causal forces that explain the socioeconomic changes which the São Paulo's main metropolis has gone through in the last years.Furthermore, I shall seek to demonstrate empirically and theoretically that the metropolitan industrial linkages are major references to the territorial re-organization of production in the São Paulo state. After doing so, my objective shall be to demonstrate that both the post-industrial visions and the perspectives of dispersion of industrial development in São Paulo have been engendering some risks to the accurate comprehension of the role of the metropolitan industrial linkages in an innovative strategy of development
