Esta tese pretende oferecer uma análise da trajetória e da obra de Raymond Williams do ponto de vista de sua atuação política. Isso significa, por um lado, acompanhar a sua atividade como militante e intelectual socialista - desde o primeiro contato com a política trabalhista em sua aldeia natal, passando pelo envolvimento com o projeto da Nova Esquerda e as polêmicas em torno do estatuto teórico do marxismo inglês, até as intervenções de Williams na cena política da Grã-Bretanha dos anos 1980. Por outro lado, significa definir em que medida seus textos carregam as marcas dos debates que dominaram a cena política da esquerda inglesa da segunda metade do século XX, com destaque para as crises dos anos 1950, as idas e vindas do Partido Trabalhista nos anos 1960 e 1970 e o domínio conservador sob o governo de Margareth Thatcher nos anos 1980. Para tanto, procurou-se desenvolver uma análise que fosse capaz de articular o conteúdo das obras aos principais momentos da história política e intelectual do campo da esquerda na Grã-Bretanha. Com base nessa abordagem, verificou-se que Williams não só teve uma atuação destacada nos experimentos políticos mais importantes levados a cabo pela esquerda inglesa na segunda metade do século XX, como projetou sua teoria tendo em vista, também, os principais desafios políticos que se impunham à sua época.

This thesis intends to offer an analysis of Raymond Williams' path and work from the point of view of his political activity. This means, on one hand, to follow his practice as a militant and intellectual socialist - since the first contact with Labour politics at his home village, through the engagement with the New Left project and the disputes concerning the theoretical status of English Marxism, to Williams' interventions on Britain's political scenario in the 1980s. On the other hand, it means to speciffy in which ways his texts bear the signs of the debates that prevailed on the English left's political scene in the second half of the 20^th century, particularly the crisis of the 1950s, the comings and goings of the Labour Party in the 1960s and 1970s and the conservative dominance under the Thatcher administration in the 1980s. Therefore, our intention was to undertake an analysis that would be capable of connecting the works' content with the main moments of the political and intellectual history of the left in Britain. Based on this approach, we can conclude that Williams not only played a key part at the most important political experiments undertaken by the English left in the second half of the 20^th century but designed his theory also considering the main political challenges that impacted his time.
