Abstract in English
This dissertation discusses how the intertwinement of sociology and critique shapes Max Horkheimers theory of society. In order to do it, the present work focuses mainly on writings, speeches and archival material of a decade and a half, spanning from 1948 when, after the exile in USA, he returns to Germany, regains his professorship at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität, in Frankfurt am Main, and shortly thereafter occupies the post of university president during two mandates to 1962, when he becomes emeritus. The work consists of four chapters and also outlines an interlude on the relation between formation (Bildung) and science (Wissenschaft) in the German context and an excursus that takes up some critiques addressed to Horkheimers theory. During this undertaking, the dissertation reconstructs the historical context and the scientific-philosophical foundations of the concept of modern German university as well as locates the emergence of sociology as a scientific discipline. It also turns itself to the appearance of knowledge as a theme in the Horkheimerean works since the decade of 1920, to recoup the myriad of articles of the 1930s where he develops his interpretation of historical materialism that underlies the theoretical diagnostics brought forward at the Institut für Sozialforschung. After focusing books written in the decade of 1940, Dialectic of enlightenment and Eclipse of reason whilst at the same time pointing out Horkheimers interpretive changes, it aims to emphasize the continuity in his thought, to conclude by examining the discourses, annotations and archival material from his personal as well as the university archive with the intention of illuminating his post-war thought, sistematically left aside in various studies on this author. Therefore, by deepening the aspects of his performance as university president along with the commitment in creating the first sociology course in Frankfurt, when he parallely problematizes the space befitting the ideal of formation (Bildung) amidst advanced industrial society, one discusses more thoroughly the way in which Horkheimers public speeches from the period approach the pertinent roles of sociology, formation and university in the context of a growingly administered society facing heteronomous human beings conditioned through instrumental reason.
