Abstract in Portuguese
Além disso, entrevistamos lideranças envolvidas no processo.

Abstract in English
This thesis presents the history of political formulations, complaints, propositions, struggle flags and slogans proposed by black organizations in Brazil against police violence, from 1978 to 2018. The research approaches some emblematic cases of police violence that drew the attention of black organizations, the media and institutional politics, based on private documentary material provided by some of the leaders involved in the protests following these cases. We focused on the appearance of terms and expressions that alluded to the problem of police violence in pamphlets, posters, manifests, reports etc. In addition, and secondarily, we interviewed some leaders involved in the process. Some other secondary documentary sources were used, such as social media, to provide background. Content analysis was the methodology used to observe the construction of semantic bridges that represented the set of black experiences regarding State violence. Thus, we were supported by the theory of recognition by Axel Honneth, considering that the ethical conflicts produced by the police violence are a systematic fact derived from unfulfilled expectations of reciprocal recognition, in which death is a daily reality to the black and peripheral population. The analyses of the material identified three major semantic bridges that organize and give meaning to the black experience from the complaints of police violence, enabling the establishment of three periods of protest during the period of forty years studied: racial discrimination (1978-1988), racial violence (1989-2006) and black genocide (2007-2018). In addition to the slogans, we focused on the emblematic cases documented in the personal collections, the campaigns against police violence and the interaction between the specific agenda against violence and the national political agendas in general (impeachments, Constituent Assembly, etc.).
