Esta tese de doutorado tem como objeto a crítica literária veiculada em jornais e revistas cariocas entre as décadas de 1920 e 1950, quando o Rio de Janeiro era capital do Brasil. A crítica literária (ou crítica de rodapé, como também foi denominada) desempenhou função decisiva na arbitragem cultural. Orientado pela Sociologia da Cultura, pela Sociologia da Literatura e pela Sociologia da Religião, percorro três objetivos. Primeiramente, mapear em detalhe o objeto, definindo os veículos da crítica, seus autores mais notáveis e desvelando as ligações existentes entre estes, a esfera política, o mercado editorial, a religião e outras instâncias. Em segundo lugar, elucidar a relação vigente entre parte da intelectualidade do Rio de Janeiro e a militância católica, no contexto do período da neocristandade, caracterizado pela iniciativa política e cultural da Igreja Católica e do laicato em nível nacional (MAINWARING, 2004). Por fim, aproximar a crítica carioca da crítica paulista, considerando Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo como centros da modalidade e aprimorando a visão sobre o campo literário brasileiro. Como hipótese, considero que os críticos do Rio de Janeiro tenham sido, em sua maioria, críticos católicos, sob liderança de Tristão de Athayde (Alceu Amoroso Lima). Esta afiliação, que era socialmente condicionada, afetou pareceres literários. Para investigar o fenômeno e compreender meu objeto, dedico capítulos específicos ao exame dos dois principais críticos literários do momento, ambos católicos: Tristão de Athayde e Álvaro Lins

This doctoral thesis focuses on literary criticism published in Rio de Janeiro's newspapers and magazines between the 1920s and 1950s, when Rio de Janeiro was the capital of Brazil. Literary criticism (or crítica de rodapé [footnote criticism], as it was also called) played a decisive role in cultural arbitration. Guided by the Sociology of Culture, the Sociology of Literature and the Sociology of Religion, I pursue three goals. First, thoroughly map the object, defining the vehicles of criticism, its most notable writers and revealing the links between them, the political context, the publishing market, religion and other instances. Second, to elucidate the current relationship between part of the intelligentsia of Rio de Janeiro and the Catholic militancy, in the context of the neo-Christianity period, characterized by the political and cultural initiative of the Catholic Church and the laity on the national level (MAINWARING, 2004). Finally, to bring Rio de Janeiros criticism closer to São Paulos criticism, considering Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo as centers of the modality and improving the vision of the Brazilian literary field. As a hypothesis, I consider that the critics of Rio de Janeiro were, for the most part, Catholic critics, under the leadership of Tristão de Athayde (Alceu Amoroso Lima). This affiliation, which was socially conditioned, affected literary statements. To investigate the phenomenon and understand my object, I dedicate specific chapters to the examination of the two main literary critics of the moment, both Catholics: Tristão de Athayde and Álvaro Lins
