Abstract in English
This master's dissertation aims to investigate anti-racism in the peripheral literature movement (in São Paulo, Brazil). which includes both oral and written literature. A group formed by cultural producers, writers, organizers of slams competitions and soirées, as well as the public. To analyze anti-racism, I have considered as its main feature the action of affirming race as a social construction, as a way to allow black people to positively identify themselves and also to denounce racist practices in society. During the research, I have analyzed the origins of anti-racist speech and the anti-racist practice in the peripheral literature movement (of São Paulo). For that purpose, I have identified what the bibliography on peripheral literature has said about race. I have also compared what the urban studies said about periphery to i) formulations about race by racial relations studies and; ii) the use of the word periphery by the hip hop movement. The comparison among these three aimed to produce a genealogy of the word periphery based on the meanings used by the peripheral literature movement. I have also recorded interviews using the snowball sampling method, by which I have identified potential interviewees to talk about anti-racism. By identifying what has been said about racial issues in peripheral literature studies, making a genealogy of that term, and interviewing participants of the movement, I have tried to understand the features and dynamics of the anti-racist practices beyond its more visible and pronounced elements.
