Este estudo tem por objeto o exame das dinâmicas sociais que mediaram as relações entre Igreja, Estado e mecenato privado através das quais emergiram grupos de intelectuais que presidiram as distintas etapas de formação do Ensino Superior no Maranhão, num intervalo temporal recortado a partir da Primeira República até a instauração da Ditadura Militar. Trata-se de uma investigação sobre os condicionantes estruturais, os mecanismos operacionais e as lógicas de atuação coletivas e individuais que puseram em funcionamento as engrenagens desse espaço intelectual específico, no bojo do qual travaram-se as disputas concorrenciais pelo monopólio da dominação simbólica legítima, as lutas de forças pela imposição dos princípios de afirmação e de legitimação da atividade acadêmico-científica e os embates pelo controle do acesso aos postos docentes e dirigentes das escolas superiores. A partir da aplicação do conceito inédito de dominium social, aqui erigido num diálogo crítico entre as formulações teóricas de Pierre Bourdieu, Max Weber e Norbert Elias, foi possível a arquitetura de três dimensões de análise para tornar compreensíveis as intersecções de práticas e lógicas que tipificam os fenômenos sociais em contextos periféricos sem descurar, no entanto, dos liames estruturais que os enredam às escalas regional, nacional e transnacional. Em primeiro, procedeu-se à sociogênese desse espaço de produção científica sublinhando-se a inflexão paradigmática nos critérios de afirmação e de consagração intelectual como subproduto das lutas de forças entre as frações cultas dominantes pela definição da atividade intelectual por excelência (Capítulo 1). Além disso, examinou-se a mutação das modalidades institucionais da educação superior, salientando-se a estruturação do aparato universitário montado pela Igreja, pautada nos critérios de uma "ciência em nome de Deus", até a federalização do sistema universitário nacional (Capítulo 2). Em seguida, com base no método prosopográfico e na elaboração de quadros sinóticos, tratou-se da morfologia dos grupos dirigentes do Ensino Superior, analisando-se estatisticamente os registros sociográficos coletados. Foram explicitados padrões dominantes de carreira socioprofissional relativos aos diplomados em Direito e em Medicina, ressaltando-se, ainda, os perfis sociais dissonantes ilustrativos do autodidatismo e do sacerdócio (Capítulo 3). Por fim, analisou-se a trajetória de quatro casos representativos dos perfis destacados, apreendendo-se a relação entre trunfos, recursos e o patrimônio de disposições individuais mobilizados no acesso às posições consideradas, cujo peso variou conforme a ascensão ou o descenso dos agentes na estrutura dos cargos públicos de poder, revelando-se as estratégias e os repertórios de atuação política e cultural (Capítulo 4). Este estudo evidencia, assim, a dupla face dos modos de dominação, política e simbólica, caracterizada pela homologia estrutural entre as posições de poder político e de poder intelectual, sinalizando-se o aumento da valorização dos capitais simbólico e de socializações em detrimento da fraca institucionalização, da forte interdependência às estruturas de poder e da limitada autonomia do dominium universitário.

This study aims to examine the social dynamics that mediated the relations between Church, State and private patronage through which groups of intellectuals emerged and came to preside over the multi-stage formation of Higher Education in the Brazilian State of Maranhão within the interval from the First Republic until the establishment of the Military Dictatorship. This is an investigation on the structural constraints, the operational mechanisms and the collective and individual action logics that set in motion the gears of a specific intellectual space where competitive disputes were fought aiming 1) the monopoly of legitimate symbolic domination, 2) the imposition of affirming and legitimizing principles of the academic-scientific activity and 3) the access control to teaching and steering positions in High Schools. By using the unprecedented concept of social dominium, built here in a critical dialogue between the theoretical formulations of Pierre Bourdieu, Max Weber and Norbert Elias, it was possible to architecture three anlytical dimensions that construe the actions and logics intersections that typify social phenomena in peripheral contexts, without neglecting its structural links intertwined at regional, national and transnational scales. First, I proceeded to the sociogenesis of this scientific production space, emphasizing the paradigmatic inflection in the criteria of affirmation and intellectual consecration as a by-product of the struggles between dominant cultured fractions for the definition of intellectual activity par excellence (Chapter 1). In addition, I examined the changing institutional modalities of higher education, highlighting the structuring of the university apparatus set up by the Church and based on criteria of a "science in the name of God", all the way through the federalization of the national university system (Chapter 2). Then, based on the prosopographic method and the elaboration of synoptic tables, I dealt with the morphology of the leading groups in Higher Education, statistically analyzing the collected sociographic records. This thesis also explicits dominant socio-professional career patterns related to Law and Medical graduates, with remarks on the dissonant social profiles that illustrates self-teaching and the priesthood (Chapter 3). Finally, I analyzed the trajectory of four representative cases of the highlighted profiles by apprehending the relationship between assets, resources and the patrimony of individual dispositions mobilized in the access to the considered positions, whose weight varied according to the rise or fall of the agents in the structure of powerful public positions, revealing the strategies and repertoires of political and cultural action (Chapter 4). This study highlights, therefore, the duplicity of political and symbolic domination modes, characterized by the structural homology between positions of political and intellectual power, which signals an enhancing value of symbolic capital and socialization to the detriment of a feeble institutionalization, a strong interdependence of power structures and a limited autonomy of university dominium.
