Abstract in English
Brazilian political activism of present days relies on the pronounced participation of liberal-conservative groups. This thesis is dedicated to studying this field, for what we have selected the one we consider its main representative: MBL Movimento Brasil Livre [Free Brazil Movement]. This work is based on qualitative research methods and is supported by the theoretical framework of Contentious Politics. In dialogue with the recent literature on the phenomenon, we argue that the resurgence of liberal-conservative activism was thrust by the cycle of protests that began in June 2013, and contributed to reconfigure the disposition and meanings of political activism. Under the influence of conservative ideologues, the group renewed the usual performances of contentious poli-tics and was certified as a political actor due to its noticeability. In the same sense, peer competition and the effort to get credit for leading Dilma Rousseff's impeachment mobilizations were responsible for consolidating the group as a political actor while contributing to a recrudescence of the mobilizations. The group's trajectory also corroborates a tendential increasing logic of institutional activism within the so-called "movement parties". Faced with the inherent dynamism of the political process and the rearrangement of forces, MBL had to reposition itself in the field in order to ensure its survival and build a solid constituency. But the strategic shifts also brought about supporters' defection and the need to a tactical reorientation, though no less consistent with a conservative agenda.
