Keywords in Portuguese
Cultura caipira
Êxodo rural
Viola caipira

Masters of yesterday and today: a sociology of the viola caipira
Keywords in English

Rural exodus
Abstract in English
This thesis analyzes the different uses of the "viola caipira" (Brazilian ten-string guitar), looking to the past as essential to understanding the performance of contemporary guitarists. The thesis is divided into two parts, Masters of yesterday and Masters of today, in order to cover both the evolution of the chordophone throughout Brazilian territory, as well as the "viola caipira" different uses both within and outside of the recording industry. The thesis also analyzes the history of the "caipira" culture, as well as transformations of the Brazilian rural environment and guitarists representations that use this culture as the foundation for their artistic practices. The migration from rural areas to towns and from small towns to metropolitan areas is the social process that runs through the entire thesis, and serves as the point of intersection between the studies of cultural sociology and rural sociology on which the research is based.
