Este trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar a contribuição de Mary Wollstonecraft, em Reivindicação dos Direitos da Mulher (1792), para a reflexão suscitada pela Revolução francesa a respeito da condição das mulheres no final do século XVIII e seus direitos. Um dos desdobramentos importantes da Declaração de Direitos do Homem e do Cidadão (1789) foi permitir que as mulheres encontrassem um vocabulário para expressar suas demandas, de modo que no final do século XVIII há um intenso debate público sobre a natureza feminina e seu papel na sociedade. Wollstonecraft caracteriza a condição das suas contemporâneas como uma situação de degradação e miséria, a qual ela atribui à educação negligenciada das meninas, orientada por manuais que não consideravam as mulheres enquanto seres humanos. Para Wollstonecraft, a educação permitiria que as mulheres aperfeiçoassem a razão, o que as tornaria independentes e virtuosas, aptas a contribuir para o progresso da sociedade como um todo. Essa dissertação pretende entender, portanto: (i) como a crítica de Wollstonecraft à exclusão das mulheres se insere no debate entre tradição e inovação que se deu no período, apresentando o contexto de produção da obra de 1792; (ii) analisar a proposta de Wollstonecraft da educação como meio de fomentar a independência das mulheres.

It is this dissertation's objective to explore Mary Wollstonecraft's Vindication of the Rights of Woman's contribution to the debate concerning women's place in society that followed the French Revolution. The Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen (1789) gave excluded groups the vocabulary to express their repressed demands. At the end of the century, thus, there is a fruitful public debate on women's nature and their role in society. Wollstonecraft characterised their condition as one of degradation and misery, which she sees as a direct consequence of their neglected education that does not consider women as part of humanity. For Wollstonecraft, education could allow women to perfect their understanding, making them independent and virtuous and, therefore, contributing to the welfare of the whole humankind. This work aims at understanding (i) how Wollstonecraft's critique to the exclusion of women is situated in the debate between tradition and inovation; and (ii) analysing Wollstonecraft's project of education to women's independence.
