Com a eleição de governos progressistas nas duas primeiras décadas do século XXI, transformações significativas no âmbito dos direitos das mulheres ocorreram na América Latina. Enquanto algumas questões que se apresentavam como mais palatáveis perante a opinião pública avançaram, outras, mais polêmicas, progrediram timidamente, chegando a retroceder em alguns casos. With the election of left-wing governments in the first two decades of the twenty-first century, there have been major developments in women's rights in Latin America. While some issues considered more acceptable to public opinion have been brought forward, others, more controversial, have progressed slowly, in some cases even backwards. Abortion policies are an example of this process.
