A Igreja e a democracia e a questão da democracia na Igreja são os temas centrais deste texto, que tem, como principal referência, o conceito e o exercício do poder. Embora reconheça o regime democrático como o menos imperfeito, a Igreja Católica apresenta indicadores de um elevado déficit democrático interno. Vários fatos reforçam a hipótese de que esta instituição não é democrática, embora existam correntes que afirmam uma afinidade doutrinária entre o Catolicismo e a democracia. Com base na teoria crítica da sociedade, o texto faz um percurso pela história da Igreja e pelas suas instâncias de poder, comparando-as com os resultados da construção da democracia. Analisa também os modelos de Igreja e os seus pólos de poder, em constante interação dialética. Por último, sintetiza alguns dos desafios estratégicos colocados para a Igreja, neste início do século XXI

The Church and democracy and the question of democracy in the Church are the themes of this text, who has, as the main reference, the concept and the practice and the theory of power. In despite of recognizining democracy as the less imperfect system, the Roman Catholic Church presents some indicators of a high democratic deficit in his interior. Many facts reinforce the hypothesis that this institution is not democratic, in despite of the existence of some tendencies who indicates a support to the theses of the link between Catholicism and democracy. With the reference of the critical theory of society, the text reads the Church's history and describes his instances of power, making a comparison with the outcomes of democracy. It makes also an analysis of the Church's models and his power's poles, who interacts in a permanent dialectic. Finnaly, resumes some of the strategical challenges, who are in face of' the Church, in this new century
