Efeitos do strain em nanofios politípicos
Keywords in Portuguese

Politipismo

Polytypism
Abstract in English
Compound III-V semiconductor nanowires have a wide variety of applications in technological devices. The advancement of techniques for the growth of these nanostructures makes it possible to obtain nanowires in the pure zincblend or wurtzite phase, and it is also possible to produce nanowires where these two phases coexist. This coexistence of these two phases is called polytypism, and it has great effects on band structures, due to the confinement of charge carriers. The realistic description of band structures allows us to understand the influence of confinement on charge carriers, and how this affects the optical and electronic properties of the system. In this work, the k · p method will be used to construct the 8 × 8 Hamiltonian for the zincblend and wurtzite crystal structures. Starting from the formulation of envelope functions, we will build the matrix Hamiltonian for a heterostructure in direct space, and expanding the envelope functions into plane waves, we will build the Hamiltonian for a heterostructure in reciprocal space. Polytypism leads to different lattice constants for the two crystalline phases, which tend to fit into the polytypic interface. The main objective of this work is to build a mathematical model that describes how the lattice parameters of the zincblend and wurtzite phases fit at the polytypic interface. The strain, which results from the interaction of zincblend and wurtzite phase atoms at the polytypic interface, will be applied in a quantum well to investigate its effects on the band structures of a polytypic wurtzite/zincblend system.
