Abstract in English
The material known as coal fly ash (or simply fly ash, FA), constituted mostly of aluminum silicates, is one of the residues produced in greater quantity during the burning of pulverized coal in thermoelectric plants. Due to the large volume of this waste, AF can be considered an environmental pollutant and the search for its applications and reuse represents a relevant issue. Currently, the main reuse of "fly ash" involves the civil construction, paving and agricultural industries. However, little has been reported about the search for more refined products with greater added value for this potential low-cost raw material. In this work sought to use this pollutant as a modifier in graphite and polyurethane-based composites and the evaluation of its performance as an electrode material (GPUE-FA) is presented. Therefore, the composite was characterized by EDX, TG/DTG, MEV and EIS and used as an electrode in the individual and simultaneous determination of metallic cations. Parameters affecting the voltammetric peak current were optimized for differential pulse anode stripping voltammetry (DPASV) resulting in a linear response for cadmium(II), used as an electrochemical probe, in the range of 0.2 to 1.0 x 10-6 mol L-1, with a detection limit (LOD) of 6.6 x10-8 mol L-1 using 5.0% GPUE-FA. Cd(II) was also added to mineral water, tap water and artesian water samples and determined with an average recovery of 99% at concentrations at 10-7 mol L-1 level. This ion was also extracted from exhausted rechargeable Ni-Cd batteries and diluted to c.a. 0.2 µmol L-1 and determined with the same electrode, with recoveries of 98.7% when compared to FAAS. This same electrode was also used in the simultaneous determination of zinc(II), lead(II), copper(II) and mercury(II) in ethanol fuel samples, after optimizing solution and DPASV parameters. Zn(II) was not detectable at low concentrations, but Pb(II) and Hg(II) showed linearity in the 1.0 to 8.0 x 10-6 mol L-1 range with LODs of 0.9 and 1.0 x 10-7 mol L-1, respectively, while for Cu(II) linearity at 4.0 and 14 x 10-6 mol L-1 ranges with an LOD of 4.0 x 10-7 mol L-1 were found The electrode showed an average recovery of 103% at concentrations at 10-6 mol L-1 level in a solutions containing 30% (v/v) of ethanol fuel. In all cases studied, the modified GPUE-FA 5% (m/m), electrode was more sensitive than the unmodified one, demonstrating the feasibility of using the FA as electrode modifier.
