Abstract in English
Water is essential for any human activities; however, the available freshwater is small, compared to the total present on the planet, and is found mainly in aquifers. These groundwaters have been increasingly exploited for multiple uses, as they are of excellent quality and their collection is low cost, however, there are numerous possible sources of contamination, particularly in areas of direct recharge. Among the categories of contaminants are those considered emerging, whose concentration is low, without specific legislation and difficult to monitor, but suspected of causing harm to living organisms. The most alarming characteristic of this type of contamination is the inefficiency of conventional treatments in removing it, which has encouraged the search for alternative treatments. Among these, advanced electrochemical oxidative processes have shown promising results, particularly using boron-doped diamond (BDD) anodes. The present work aimed to analyze the efficiency and applicability of the electrochemical treatment, with a BDD anode, of a real matrix, consisting of water from an artesian well, artificially contaminated with tetracycline, bisphenol A, atrazine, and Escherichia coli. Although the water used presented sufficient conductivity for the efficient operation of the electrochemical system, situations of excess supporting electrolyte with different types of anions (Cl-, NO3-, SO42- and PO43-) were simulated. Ion chromatography, cyclic voltammetry, TOC, HPLC, COD, BOD analyzes were performed, as well as CFU counting by droplet method and imaging using a scanning electron microscope, in order to evaluate the capacity of the electrochemical system used (anode and supporting electrolyte) in the degradation and mineralization of organic compounds and its potential as a bactericidal system. The results show the potential of the treatment studied in the decontamination of real matrices, with the possibility of complete degradation and high levels of mineralization after 2h of treatment, combined with the rapid bactericidal action causing the lysis of the bacteria used. The analysis showed that the treatment is greatly influenced by the ions present in the solution since the results show significant differences, as well as, different interactions with each contaminant used.
