Abstract in English
In the present study, gold and silver mono- and bimetallic nanoparticles anchored on carbon (Au/C , Ag/C and AgxAu1-x/C ) were synthesized using glycerol in alkaline medium as a reducing agent. The materials obtained were characterized by Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction and Transmission Electron Microscopy. The evaluation of the electrochemical performance was conducted by Chronoamperometry and Cyclic Voltammetry. In Situ Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR in situ) was performed to study the mechanism of electro-oxidation of glycerol, 1,2-propanediol and propanol. The average size of the nanoparticles, calculated from TEM, are 40.4 nm (Ag/C), 6.8 nm (Au/C), 5.7 nm (Ag25Au75/C), 5.3 nm (Ag50Au50/C) and 4.9 nm (Ag75Au25/C). For the bimetallic, it was observed that with increasing the amount of gold present in catilisadores was obtained an increase in the electrocatalytic activity to the same extent for oxidation of alcohols. Among the alcohols, the glycerol oxidation catalyzed by Au/C showed the lower onset oxidation potential (0.65 V) followed by propane-1,2-diol (0.67 V) and propanol (0.75 V). The anodic current density was higher for the alcohol with lower pKa and greater number of hydroxyl groups. Format, oxalate and glycolate were the main products of the glycerol oxidation using Au/C. For the 1,2-propanediol oxidation the hydroxiacetona and acetate were the major products; and for the propanol oxidation was propanoate, both also on Au/C as indicated by the in situ FTIR experiments.
