Abstract in English
The production of raw materials for the sugar and alcohol industry, the harvesting of sugar cane is a high cost service. The scarcity of labor and environmental legislation eliminated the burning of cane fields, which made manual harvesting impossible, forcing the harvest to be replaced for mechanized harvesting. Due to the difficulty of adapting the harvester to the soil, this method contributed to the increase of mineral impurities in the cane to be ground. In the juice extraction operations, various types of impurities are carried, including the mineral for the ethanol production process. In the industrial clarification of sugarcane juice, excessive mineral impurities pass through the process flow to the ethanol plant, more precisely to the fermentation reactors. After the end of the fermentation, the wine is taken to the centrifugation process to separate the yeast from the wine to be distilled, and in this process, the nozzles of the centrifuges are blocked, caused by the impurities from the fermentation. Centrifuges need to stop for cleaning, on average every two hours of operation because of the amount of solid materials, impacting their production and maintenance. As in the ethanol manufacturing industry there is no equipment for this purpose, so a gravitational separator of mineral impurities was created in the lung vat (passage vat) based on the process settling by densification. A pilot plant was built in carbon steel plate simulating a micro separation process and the equipment was evaluated through the balance of solids in the wine using pycnometry (density) with three different flow rates. Decreasing efficiency values of 6.45% were obtained in the first cycle; 3.87% in the second cycle and 3.17% in the third cycle. Using the same principle as the previous equipment, a solid separator was created on an industrial scale to meet the urgent demand of the industry. This solids separator was implanted in the existing lung vat, whose separation efficiencies were obtained as follows: 3.7% in the first vat; 4.9% in the second vat and 4.3% in the third vat. After installation in the industry, the cleaning and maintenance of the centrifuges reduced the frequency of two for every eight hours of continuous work. If this equipment were not available, impurities with a density greater than 1.0615 would be returned by centrifugation for the next fermentation cycle, increasing the concentration even more in the fermentation.
