Abstract in English
Thermal stress in dairy cows has been studied as a way to improve productive efficiency and animal welfare. Several authors have verified the potential of infrared thermography as a noninvasive tool to monitor surface temperature of animals. Similarly, computer models have been studied in animal area in order to improve data processing systems. The objective of this study was to develop a classifier to estimate the thermal comfort level of dairy cows (Holstein) using computational modeling, a technique that can assist in this prediction by extracting information from combined meteorological and physiological data. For this, the rectal temperature (RT), respiratory rate (RR) and body surface temperature (IRT) of 26 lactating cows were monitored during 40 non-consecutive days, three times a day (5, 13 and 19 hours) in two times of year - summer and winter. IRTs of the forehead, eye area, rib and flank regions. In the same period, weather data were recorded at a weather station and data loggers (Onset HOBO) installed in the freestall. Herd production data were monitored as conducted by the USP Milk Cattle Sector, Pirassununga, SP. Data analysis was performed by descriptive statistics and linear regression to assist in the choice of parameters of computational models, so that models based on artificial neural network (ANN) and convolutional neural network (CNN) were developed considering climatic and physiological variables defined by such analysis. The ANN-based models were built using Perceptron architecture, fed with multiple layers. CNN-based models were developed according to the Sequential model. The efficiency of ANN-based models for predicting RR (ANN-RR) and RT (ANN-RT) was evaluated with scatter plots between predicted and actual responses and by comparison with statistical model responses (regression analyzes) for predicting RR (REG-RR) and RT (REG-RT). From the ANN-RR and ANN-RT models, classifications were developed for thermal stress levels (Comfort, Alert, Danger and Emergency). The efficiency of these classifications was assessed by metrics extracted from confusion matrices (accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and F1 Score) and compared with the results of traditional methods of classifications for thermal stress levels, the Temperature and Humidity Index (THI), and the Black Globe Humidity Temperature Index (BGTHI). For the CNN-based model, the parameters extracted from confusion matrices were used as a way to evaluate the performance of the classifications in developed thermal stress levels. Regarding the RR and RT estimates, it was observed that the ANN models presented better results when compared to the REG, observing correlations of 0.83 (ANN-RR) and 0.84 (ANN-RT) to estimate the results of physiological data. The ANN-based classifiers presented better results compared to the classifications obtained with the BGTHI and the THI. In relation to the CNN-based classifier, this study demonstrated that it is a promising tool with potential for pattern identification and thermal image classification at thermal stress levels. The accuracy obtained with this classifier (CNN) was 76% for RR and 71% for RT. Further studies should be done to minimize the effect of the climate environment on thermal imagery and to contribute to color scale standardization that directly affect CNN learning.
