Keywords in Portuguese
Anormalidades craniofaciais
Ortodontia
Síndrome de Goldenhar
Abstract in Portuguese
O Espectro oculoauriculovertebral (EOAV) é uma condição clínica decorrente do desenvolvimento anormal do primeiro e do segundo arcos faríngeos. Aspectos clínicos frequentemente encontrados incluem anomalias mandibulares, maxilares e auriculares.

Analysis of the orthodontic treatment need in individuals with OAVS

Abstract in English
The Oculoauriculovertebral Spectrum (OAVS) is a clinical condition resulting from the abnormal development of the first and second pharyngeal arches. Clinical aspects frequently found include mandibular, maxillary, and auricular anomalies. These alterations can cause asymmetrical occlusal disorders and make orthodontic planning difficult for these patients. Thus, it was decided to evaluate a homogeneous sample of individuals with OAVS (n=19) from the Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies (HRAC/USP) regarding the need for orthodontic treatment. The measurement of variables was performed using the Orthoanalyzer Software and the cephalometric measurements were performed using Dolphin Imaging®. To analyze the variables, the affected side was compared to the unaffected side using the Discrepancy Index. Then, the paired Student's t-test was applied for variables with normal distribution and the Wilcoxon test for those without normal distribution. There was no difference between sides. For qualitative variables, the McNemar test indicated that there was a greater chance of buccal and lingual crossbite on the affected side compared to the unaffected side. Spearman's coefficient revealed a moderate correlation between OAVS severity and overbite on the affected side and overjet on the affected and unaffected sides. The results showed that the side affected with OAVS commonly presents lingual and buccal crossbite in relation to the unaffected side. In addition, overbite on the affected side increases with the severity of the OAVS, as well as overjet, on both affected and unaffected sides.
