Body image versus nutritional status in adolescents with and without cleft lip and palate

Abstract in English
The body image, defined as the evaluation of perception of an individual concerning his or her body functioning and physical appearance, may be more impaired in adolescence, since the acceptance of body appearance requires an understanding of him/herself, and the self-image of adolescents often does not reflect their image seen on the mirror. Additionally, in this period of life there are several and intense behavioral, physiological, emotional, cultural and psychosocial changes. Adolescents with cleft lip and palate may be at higher risk of self-body image disorders and psychosocial problems due to differences in their facial appearance. The satisfaction about physical appearance, perceptions of body shape and weight have been widely investigated. Therefore, the present study evaluated the possible correlation between nutritional status and the body self-image perception of adolescents aged 12 to incomplete 18 years, with and without cleft lip and palate, of both genders. The adolescents were divided into groups (SG and CG / MG and FG). The study applied the Brazilian version of the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ) to evaluate the body self-image, and the nutritional status was evaluated by calculation of the Body Mass Index (BMI). Comparison between SG and CG revealed greater satisfaction with the appearance for the SG compared to the CG; between the MG and FG, the MG presented to be more concerned about overweight than the FG. Further studies analyzing the body self-image and nutritional status should be encouraged, aiming at health promotion and acceptance of body self-image, minimizing and/or avoiding future self-image distortions and reduction of risk factors in this population
