Abstract in English
The present study assessed the symmetry of the dental arches in cleft and noncleft patients by comparing and correlating the right and left sides of the dental arches (maxilla and mandible), after orthodontic and implant supported prostheses. Observational, retrospective, cross-sectional study including 40 patients, aged varying from 18 and 30 years, was divided into 2 groups: Group 1 (G1), 20 patients with cleft lip and palate undergoing orthodontic treatment and rehabilitated with implant supported prostheses in the cleft area, group 2 (G2), 20 non-cleft patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. All patients were diagnosed with anterior and/or posterior crossbite and were submitted to similar orthodontic mechanics. Exclusion criteria were orthognathic surgery, syndromes and incomplete documentation. The symmetry of the arch was analyzed using dental models digitized with a laser scanner (R700TM; 3Shape). Three linear measurements were determined on each side (right and left): incisal-canine distance (INC), canine molar (CM), and incisal-molar (INM) and were evaluated using the Vectra Analysis Module program (VECTRA H1; Canfield Scientific, Inc). The paired t-test and Pearson's correlation coefficient (r-value), significance = 0.05, were used to compare the right and left sides of the arches, according to the group and sex. Pearson's correlation coefficient showed a strong correlation for both groups in the maxilla. In the mandibular arch, the G2 group showed no tendency to symmetry in the posterior region of the mandible. In the mandibular arch, the G2 group showed no tendency to symmetry in the posterior region of the mandible (CM: r = 0.46; INM: r = 0.35). In contrast, in G1, non-symmetry was observed in the anterior region (INC: r = 0.25). As for sex, both showed a strong correlation in the maxilla, although in the female sex in G2 the paired t-test showed a difference in the anterior region of the maxilla (INC: p = 0.04) and posterior of the mandible (INM: p = 0.01), regardless of the strong correlation between the values. In the mandible, the G1 group, in females, did not show symmetry in the anterior region (INC: r = 0.18). In the G2 group, male individuals did not show symmetry in the posterior region of the mandible (CM: r = 0; INM: r = 0.1), whereas female individuals did not show symmetry in the anterior region(INC: r = 0.27). Patients rehabilitated with prostheses on implants, after rehabilitating orthodontic treatment, showed satisfactory symmetry in maxilla
