Abstract in English
lntroduction - Studies of migrant populations are useful for assessing the environmental impact on chronic diseases. Our hypothesis was that interethnic marriage promotes Westernization of dietary habits (DH) of Japanese immigrants in Brazil. Objective - To compare dietary intake, anthropometry, biochemical variables and prevalence of morbidities of participants of the Japanese-Brazilian Diabetes and Associated Diseases Study of Bauru, between individuals with intraethnic (intra-M) and interethnic (inter-M) marriage. Methods - Sociodemographic, dietary, anthropometric, laboratory and clinical data were collected of married Japanese-Brazilians aged ≥30 years (n=1009). Dietary data was obtained by validated food frequency questionnaire. Student t test, Mann-Whitney (comparisons of food groups consumption) and chi-square test (comparisons frequencies) were used and Pearson's coefficient to test correlations between the nutrient consumption and other variables. Results - There was 18.9% of inter-M, being more frequent among nikkei men. The mean age did not differ between genders, however, the education level, BMI and waist circumference were higher in men. Mean plasma glucose and triglyceride levels of the whole population were elevated and the prevalence of obesity, hypertriglyceridemia and metabolic syndrome (MS) were 47.7%, 68.1% and 45.2%, respectively. Among the inter-M compared with the intra-M, higher frequencies of obesity, hypertriglyceridemia and SM were attributed to the male sex. Women with inter-M had higher prevalence of central obesity and diabetes than women with intra-M. Comparing men and women with inter-M, the frequency of hypertriglyceridemia was higher in men and low HDL-c in women. Mean values of calories, fat (total and subtypes) intakes and medians of the food group alcohol, sweets and oils were higher in inter-M. In intra-M, higher intakes of carbohydrate, protein (% total calories), fiber, vitamins and minerals (except vitamin E) and the food groups of vegetables, fruit and fruit juice, cereals (bread, rice and pasta) and missoshiru were found. Comparing individuals with inter-M, only fat intake (% total calories) was higher in women. Conclusions - It is possible inter-M in Japanese-Brazilians favors a less healthy Westernized eating habits, contributing to deteriorate cardiometabolic risk profile. However, the cross-sectional design does not allow establishing cause-effect relationships.
