Objetivos: (1) desvelar como homens agentes comunitários de saúde percebem, descrevem e vivenciam relações de gênero na condição de "cuidadores" de famílias; (2) identificar percepções de mudanças nas suas vidas, trabalhando "cuidados" junto às famílias e (3) identificar concepções acerca da masculinidade, a partir de suas falas e narrativas. Metodologia: A pesquisa foi de natureza qualitativa e constou de duas etapas metodológicas: a primeira, com a realização de grupos focais e, a segunda, com a realização de entrevistas individuais, em profundidade. caracterizou-se em investigar 15 homens agentes comunitários de saúde, inseridos em diferentes unidades básicas de saúde do Programa Saúde da Família, localizadas em uma das regiões periféricas do Município de São Paulo. Resultados: A partir das falas e narrativas dos sujeitos da pesquisa, identificamos tratar-se de um grupo de homens com histórias profissionais pregressas marcadamente masculinas e, que, na condição de desempregados, buscaram inserção profissional como agentes comunitários de saúde. Este dado de realidade, apontou-nos questões de gênero de diversos aspectos como: não se identificar com esse trabalho, possivelmente, por desenvolverem atividades de cuidados que, historicamente, são exercidas por mulheres; a situação de "subalternidade" vivenciada na instituição, submetendo-se para manter o trabalho; o "descontentamento" advindo da rotina, burocracia e da impossibilidade de ascender profissionalmente; a dificuldade de estabelecer limites entre as fronteiras do trabalho com suas vidas particulares, decorrentes de critérios estabelecidos pelo Programa Saúde da Família como, o de ter que morar na área de atuação. Mas, por outro lado, estão vivenciando mudanças significativas em suas vidas como a de reverem seus valores, a de repensarem suas próprias relações de gênero, em suas várias dimensões, o que tudo indica, a vivência do cuidar das famílias vem facilitando. Até onde pudemos constatar, essa prática profissional também vem influindo em suas vidas privadas, fato observado quando foi discutido o que é "ser homem" versus "ser pai", ao trazerem elementos em suas falas que permitiram revelar o quanto de sensibilidade vem dissolvendo o lado "machista" de ser de cada um deles. E, também, maior flexibilização das relações de gênero no espaço doméstico.

Objectives: (1) to reveal how male community health agents perceive, describe and experience gender relations in the condition of family "caregivers"; (2) to identify perceptions of changes in their lives, working as "caregivers" among families; and (3) to identify conceptions concerning masculinity based on their discourse and narratives. Methodology: The research study was qualitative and had two methodological phases: the first one with the conduction of focus groups and the second with detailed individual interviews. It investigated 15 male community health agents, inserted in different basic health units of the Family Health Program, located in one of the peripheral regions of the city of São Paulo. Results: Based on the discourse and narratives of the research subjects, we found out that it is a group of men whose previous professional histories were markedly masculine and who, being unemployed, searched for professional insertion as community health agents. This fact from reality pointed to gender issues of many aspects, such as: failure to identify with this work, possibly because the care activities they develop have historically been performed by women; subordination situation experienced in the institution, as they submit themselves to it in arder to keep the job; dissatisfaction regarding routine, bureaucracy and impossibility to grow professionally; difficulty in establishing limits between work frontiers and their private lives, caused by the criteria established by the Family Health Program, such as the health agent must live in the area where he works. On the other hand, they are experiencing significant changes in their lives, such as the review of their values. The study indicates that the experience of taking care of the families has been facilitating a review of their own gender relations, in their severa! dimensions. As far as we could tell, this professional practice has also been influencing their private lives, a fact that was observed when they discussed "being a man" versus "being a father", when they brought elements in their discourse that revealed that sensitivity has been dissolving the "macho" way of being of each one of them.
