Abstract in English
The World's Health Organization (WHO) preconizes "the state of the children's growth to be, perhaps, the main general indicator of health conditions and nutritional circumstances in a certain community, mainly in the areas of the developing world." The survey had the aim of identifying, by means of a transversal approach, the characteristics of the school children's growth of the Educational System of Santo André County (SP) establishing comparisons among the existing standards in literature and proposing reference indicators which can may be used in the analysis of the growth as well as suit as indicators of the health conditions of the studied population. The sampling process through conglomerates was used to select the 37 schools, being the size of the sample of 2,840 school children, from 7 to 10 - years old boys and girls. For the study of the growth the measures of the body weight and height were accomplished. The descriptive statistics was used to characterize the sample in the studied variables and to establish reference values. The Analysis of TWO-WAY Variance and the test of multiple comparisons post-hoc (p <0,001) were used for the detection of the differences between the boys and girls and age groups and the test for comparison of two averages ("til of Student) in the detection of the differences among groups. No significant difference was verified among the boys and girls in relationship to the variables height and body weight. A significant growing increase (p≤0,001) was noted during aging for both, boys and girls. It was noted that the height variable that the girls presented an earning medium superior (5,6 cm/year) to the presented by the boys (5,2 cm/year). As the results of the body weight, a medium earnings around 3,5 kg/year for both, boys and girls resulted in an increment annual medium superior to that was found in the literature. The comparison of the results found in other studies showed a significant difference for Santo André's school children in both variables in function of the sex and age. Santo André's school children, when compared with the reference pattern NCHS (2005), presented inferior values (p < 0,001) for boys in the height variable to the 8 and 9 years old and in the for the body weight to the 9 years old. Girls presented inferior values (p <0,001) the 9 and 10 years old regarding variable body weight, presenting a similar pattern to the of the North American girls regarding the height. Being considered the percentage 10 and 90 as cut point for the pattern NCHS (2005), we verified that 13,61% of Santo André's school children are in surveillance in relation to the height and 16,69% in relation to the body weight. Santo André's school children present leveis of growth plenty fellow creatures to the presented by the North Americans during the pré-pubescent phase.
