Objetivo: Descrever medidas fonatórias de crianças escolares ingressantes no ensino fundamental. Método: Tratou-se de um estudo transversal, com a totalidade dos 138 alunos (76 do sexo masculino e 62 do feminino) da primeira série do ensino fundamental da Escola Estadual Rodrigues Alves (Município de São Paulo - SP), na faixa etária de sete aos nove anos incompletos. Foram excluídas do estudo as crianças que, no dia da entrevista, apresentaram febre, manifestações de gripe ou resfriado, ou que ainda apresentaram outros processos agudos e/ou crônicos, que comprometessem as vias aéreas superiores. A coleta de dados foi realizada de maneira individualizada, em sala silenciosa, no próprio local, pela pesquisadora responsável, com utilização de gravador digital portátil que cronometrou, em segundos, o tempo das tarefas propostas. Foi utilizado procedimento reconhecido pela literatura para a mensuração dos tempos máximos de fonação, tanto das vogais, como das consoantes. A análise das medidas fonatórias foi feita mediante o uso dos programas Epi Info versão 6.04, SPSS versão 11.0, e as medidas de freqüência foram comparadas, segundo análise estatística pelo t de Student.. O nível de significância aceito foi de 5%. Resultados: As médias totais dos TMF das vogais "a", "i" e "u" para o sexo feminino e masculino foram, respectivamente, 7,41 e 7,42 segundos (p= 0,9814). Não houve diferenças quando se analisaram os valores, segundo grupo etário. Em relação ao estudo da consoante "s", as médias totais dos TMF para o sexo feminino e masculino foram 5,75 e 5,09 e segundos (p= 0,0529). Quanto à consoante "z", os valores equivalentes foram 6,23 e 5,99 segundos (p= 0,5780). A relação s/z mostrou média de 0,97, para as meninas, e 0,89, para os meninos (p=0,9793). Contudo, houve diferença estatística quando se comparou o TMF específico da consoante "s" com o da consoante "z" para o sexo masculino (p= 0,0105). Conclusão: Não houve diferenças entre os sexos e idade no tocante às variáveis estudadas. Houve diferença no tocante ao valor do TMF, em crianças do sexo masculino, entre a 'Consoante "s" e a "z" (esta última, com valores maiores). A tomada de medidas fonatórias de crianças na escola pública selecionada mostrou-se de fácil operacionalização, tanto pela colaboração dos escolares e da instituição, como pela praticidade de se tomarem estas medidas de grande quantidade de indivíduos, em curto espaço de tempo.

Aim: Describe phonatory measures of children starting elementary school. Method: Crosscut study, with 138 students (76 male and 62 female) in the first grade of elementary school at Rodrigues Alves Public School (city of São Paulo - SP), ages 7 to under 9 years old. Children who had fever or any symptoms of flu or cold, or presented any acute and/or chronic processes affecting the superior airways on the day of the interview were excluded from the study. Individualized data was collected in a silent room at the school by the examiner, making use of a portable digital recorder, which timed in seconds, the duration of the proposed tasks. A literature known procedure was used to measure the maximum phonation time of both vowels and consonants. The analysis of the phonatory measures was done with the use of the programs Epi Info version 6.04, SPSS version 11.0 and the frequency measures were compared based on statistical analysis by the t of Student The significance level accepted was of 5%. Results: The total means, of the MPT of the vowels /a/, /i/ and /u/ for the female and male students were 7.41 and 7.42 seconds respectively (p= 0.9814). No differences were shown when values were analysed according to group age. As for the study of consonant /s/, the total means for the female and male students were 5. 75 and 5.09 seconds (p= 0.0529). Concerning the consonant /z/, the equivalent values were 6.23 and 5.99 seconds (p= 0.5780). The relation s/z showed means of 0.97 for the girls and 0.89 for the boys (p= 0.9793). Yet, there was statistical difference when the MPT specific to the the consonant /s/ was compared to the MPT specific to the consonant /z/ for the male students (p=0.0105). Conclusion: There were no diferences between genders and age concerning the studied variables. There were differences concernig the MPT value, in male children between the consonants /s/ and /z/ (the latter, with higher values). The taking of phonatory measures of children at the public school was operationally done at ease both for the collaboration of students and the school and for the practicity of taking these measures of a big number of individuals, in a short period of time.
