Abstract in English
Objective. The mentally iII patient is always present in the professional life of nurses in any area they perform. The basic health attention services are the spaces where preventive actions and early symptoms detection must have place. Once nurses occupy a singular place at the basic services, frequently performing the first contact with the patient, the present research aims to obtain information about the nurse's knowledge at a Basic Health Unit (Unidade Básica de Saúde) concerning to puerperal depression. Methods. A limited universe has been worked, becoming possible the knowledge of every nurse working at the Basic Health Unit. Five nurses have been interviewed individually, through semi-directive open questions, from October to December, 2003. The conversations were recorded, transcribed and analyzed producing speeches according to Collective Subject Speech's technique proposed by Lefèvre. The option by a qualitative approach brought the possibility of a deep analysis of the obtained data creating hypothesis and perspectives not identified before. Results. The produced speeches revealed that the subjects comprehend their role in recognizing depressive symptoms in women; they understand that the nurse is privileged concerning to knowing and attending almost the totality of the women at the Basic Health Unit. They perceive the diversified moments in which there are opportunities of early detecting depressive symptoms installation in postpartum women. They are aware of their lack of experience and knowledge about the theme and generalize the lacunas to the universe of mental disease. The subjects sign as their responsibility leading the patient to another professional, a psychiatrist or a psychologist. At the same time, somehow it's noticed that their role during the women's attendance could be more worked up, so that the leading could be just one of the therapeutic element in the women's rehabilitation process. Considerations. Lacunas in knowledge and maybe in academic development of the subjects establish the absence of better well founded perceptions about the nurse, himself, acting as a therapeutic instrument. Once the subjects verbalize interest and overture to incorporate new acquaintances and revive old forgotten concepts, nor the lack of time neither the lack of working conditions neither the momentary lack of understanding about the theme will obstruct them to look for new paths, adapt situations, amplify views and perceptions, create new models, construct new concepts and unconstruct old ones, meaning nothing will stop them in transforming daily the collective space that shelter them.
