A presente monografia mostra que no Brasil, há imperiosa necessidade do aproveitamento da função do matadouro como fonte de informações dentro de um Sistema de Vigilância Epidemiológica. Através do matadouro, pode-se detectar "in loco" focos de doenças, quer humanas, quer animais, sabendo-se a procedência dos animais de abate e com esta ação promover o acionamento e integração dos setores especializados. Como conclusão, sugere-se que seja realizado um estudo por parte das autoridades competentes no sentido de incluir o matadouro como uma das fontes de informações do Sistema de Vigilância Epidemiológica, aproveitando se a estrutura organizacional e a legislação existentes.

The present monograph shows that, in Brazil, there is the imperious need of taking advantage of the functions already performed by the slaughter-house These functions could be used as source of information in the epidemiology surveillance system. Through the slaughter-house, we could detect "in loco" the desease focus, either human or animal. lf the origin of the animals to be slaughtered is known, the action and integration of the specialized branches could be promoted. As a conclusion, it is suggested that a study by the legally qualified authorities be performed in order to include the slaughter house as one of the sources of information in the epidemiology surveillance system, using the organizational structure and the existent legislation
