Introdução. O envelhecimento populacional é um dos maiores desafios da saúde pública contemporânea. No Brasil, os números do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) confirmam a cada censo que o país envelhece. Justificativa. No entanto, as ações de saúde para essa população, nem sempre alcançam o sucesso desejado, especificamente no que se refere às campanhas de vacinação. O município de Santa Maria de Jetibá-ES, nos últimos dois anos, foi o último a atingir a meta de cobertura vacinal. Além disso, seus resultados nos dois últimos anos caíram em relação a 2000 e 2001, evidenciando-se baixa cobertura da vacina antigripal. No contato com as pessoas idosas, podemos observar idéias equivocadas e preconceitos que podem interferir nos cuidados com a própria saúde. Por esta razão, o interesse para uma maior investigação sobre os motivos da não vacinação dos idosos. Objetivos. 1 - Identificar as razões por que uma parcela dos idosos residentes no município de Santa Maria de Jetibá-ES não tomaram a vacina antigripal em 2003; 2 - Identificar nessa população os conhecimentos que os idosos possuem a respeito da vacina antigripal; 3 - Identificar nessa população fatores que predispõem, fatores que possibilitam e fatores que reforçam a procura de vacinação, de acordo com o Modelo PRECEDE (Green e col.). Metodologia. Foram entrevistados 40 (quarenta) idosos, com idade acima de 60 anos, que não se submeteram à vacinação antigripal, residentes no município de Santa Maria de Jetibá-ES, onde houve baixa cobertura vacinal, segundo avaliação da campanha de 2003. Resultados. Motivos referidos pelos idosos entrevistados para não se vacinarem em 2004: medo de morrer (25%), seguido de que quando tomou a vacina na campanha anterior teve gripe forte (15%), medo e não acredita na vacina (12,5%). Ao indagar sobre para que serve a vacina, 67,5% salientaram que é para evitar doenças respiratórias, como gripe, tosse e pneumonia. Em relação às perguntas baseadas no modelo PRECEDE, observou-se que dentre os fatores que predispõem, destacam-se: achava que não era necessário tomar a vacina (62,5%); não sabia para que servia a vacina (45%); as pessoas dizem que não adianta tomar a vacina contra a gripe (40%); não acredito na vacina (30%) e quando tomou a vacina, sentiu-se mal, ficou gripado (25%). Dentre os fatores que possibilitam, 97,5% não responderam, enquanto 2,5% destacaram que o transporte até ao posto é difícil, ou seja, uma questão de acessibilidade. Dentre os fatores que reforçam, 87,5% não responderam, enquanto 7,5% salientaram que sua família não queria que tomasse a vacina, e, empatados com 2,5% cada: o atendimento no posto é muito demorado e a vacina é muito dolorida ou causa desconforto. Conclusões. O engajamento e preparação de agentes comunitários e profissionais do programa de saúde da família pode ser a estratégia mais recomendada para desmistificar a vacina contra influenza junto à população idosa.

Introduction. The population aging is one of the biggest challenges of the public health contemporary. In Brazil, the numbers of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) confirm to each census that the country ages. Justification. However, the actions of health for this population, nor always they reach the desired success, specifically as for the vaccination campaigns. The city of Saint Maria de Jetibá-ES, in last the two years, he was the last one to reach the goal of vaccine covering. Moreover, its results in the two last years had fallen in relation 2000 and 2001, proving low covering of the anti-flu vaccine. In the contact with the aged people, we can observe maken a mistake ideas and preconceptions that can intervene with the cares with the proper health. For this reason, the interest for a bigger inquiry on the reasons of not the vaccination of the aged ones. Objectives. 1 - To identify the reasons why a parcel of the aged residents in the city of Saint Maria de Jetibá-ES had not taken the anti-flu vaccine in 2003; 2 - To identify in this population the knowledge that the aged ones possess regarding the anti-flu vaccine; 3 - To identify in this population factors that premake use, factors that they make possible and factors that strengthen the vaccination search, in accordance with the Model PRECEDE (Green and col.). Methodology. Aged ones had been interviewed 40 (forty), with age above of 60 years, that they had not been submitted to the anti-flu vaccination, residents in the city of Saint Maria de Jetibá-ES, where it had low vaccine covering, according to evaluation of the 2003 campaign. Results. Reasons related for the aged ones interviewed for not vaccinated itself in 2004: fear to die (25%), followed of that when took the vaccine in the previous campaign had strong grippe (15%), fear and does not believe the vaccine (12,5%).
