Propôs-se em relação às educadoras de creches verificar conhecimento, opiniões e práticas relacionadas à ocorrência, prevenção e detecção de distúrbios oftálmicos de crianças usuárias de creche, com vistas ao planejamento de treinamentos para implementação de ações de promoção da saúde ocular. O tipo de estudo realizado foi transversal, do tipo "survey". O universo constituiu-se de 842 educadoras de creche. Foram selecionadas como variáveis independentes: características pessoais, profissionais e de preparo sobre saúde ocular. Utilizou-se questionário auto-aplicado como instrumento de medida, elaborado após estudo exploratório. As educadoras apresentaram em média 8,1 anos de tempo de trabalho nas creches. A maioria (88,0%) não recebeu orientação/treinamento em saúde ocular, sendo que se consideraram despreparadas para identificação de distúrbios oculares de crianças (48,6%). Conjuntivites, terçóis e miopia, foram os distúrbios oculares mais conhecidos, sendo a ambliopia praticamente desconhecida. Quanto à aplicação do teste de acuidade visual, 72,8% declararam que ela deve ser feita por profissionais da saúde, porém, a maioria das educadoras manifestou-se favorável à necessidade de receber treinamento em saúde ocular, atribuindo-lhe grande importância (95,8%). Houve concordância da necessidade do uso de tampão ocular por criança na creche, quando indicado (88,4%). Identificou-se também a presença de crenças populares no campo da saúde ocular. As educadoras de creche consideraram-se mal preparadas e declararam desconhecer os agravos mais frequentes do sistema visual, em especial a ambliopia. É necessária a implementação de programa para desenvolvimento de ações no campo da saúde ocular e capacitação das educadoras para desenvolvê-las.

This study intend to verify the child day care centers educators' knowledge, opinions and practices related to the occurrence, prevention and detection of ophthalmic disturbances of child day care centers users, with the aim of planning training programs for the implementation of ocular health promotional actions. The study developed was transverse, as the type of "survey". The research universe was constituted of 842 child day care centers educators. The following independent variables were selected: personal and professional characteristics and ocular health abilities of the educators. Self-applied questionnaire was used as measure instrument, elaborated after previous exploratory studies. It was established in average 8,1 years of work of the child day care centers educators. Most of them (88,0%) didn't receive ocular health orientation/training, and part of them didn't consider themselves able to identify child ocular disturbances (48,6%). Conjunctivitis, styes and myopia were the most known ocular disturbances and the amblyopia was practically unknown. As for the visual sharpness test application, the educators (72,8%) declared that it should be done by health professionals, however, most of them showed favorable in receiving training in ocular health, attributing great importance to it (95,8%). There was agreement on the need for the ocular lid use by children in the child day care center, when suitable (88,4%). It was also identified the presence of popular faiths in the ocular health field. The child day care center educators demonstrated to be unable to identify ocular disturbances, specially the amblyopia, showing the need for training to develop actions in the ocular health field.
