Introdução: O gênero Aeromonas é ubiqüitário no ambiente aquático e já foi isolado de água doce, salgada, salobra, mineral, poluída ou tratada. Várias espécies de Aeromonas apresentam fatores de virulência e podem estar relacionadas a uma série de doenças para seu hospedeiro. Objetivo: Estudar a diversidade e caracterizar molecularmente através do perfil plasmidial, as diferentes espécies do gênero Aeromonas provenientes de corpos hídricos de São Paulo. Métodos: Foram coletadas 19 amostras de água, sendo 11 amostras de água doce, 1 de água salobra e 7 de água salgada. As amostras foram concentradas através de membrana filtrante e enriquecidas em 100mL de água peptonada alcalina 1 %. As amostras foram estriadas em placas de petri contendo diferentes meios de cultivo. As colônias típicas foram submetidas a provas bioquímicas para a identificação das espécies. Foi feito o levantamento bibliográfico do (ndice de Qualidade de Água (IOA) na CETESB, dos pontos de coleta analisados. Para a análise do perfil plasmidial, foi utilizada a metodologia descrita por BIRNBORN e DOLY (1979). Resultados: As espécies de Aeromonas foram isoladas em 84,2% dos ambientes isolados; segundo os dados da CETESB, 58,3% das amostras apresentaram condições favoráveis de qualidade de água; 43,2% das cepas isoladas apresentaram pelo menos um plasmídio. Conclusões: Concluiu-se que esses organismos estão amplamente distribuídos no ambiente aquático e que as espécies de Aeromonas não apresentam o mesmo perfil plasmidial. Os organismos isolados dos ambientes estudados podem representar risco à saúde.

Introduction: The genus Aeromonas is ubiquous in the aquatic environrnent and was isolated from polluted or treated tresh water, salt and brackish waters, and mineral water. Many Aeromonas species produce virulence factors that rnay be responsible for the disease in the bacterial host. Objective: To study the diversity and to characterize by plasmidial profile different species of the genus Aeromonas isolated from water bodies in the State of São Paulo. Methods: There were collected a total of 19 water samples as follow: 11 fresh-water, 1 brackish water, and 7 salt water. Samples were concentrated by filtration and enriched in 100 mL of 1 % Alcalin Peptone water. Bacteria were isolated in petri dishes containing different culture medium. Typical colonies were submitted to biochemical test for species identification. Data on Water Quality trom the collection site was obtained from CETESB. Plasmidial profile was carried out according to the rnethodology described by Birnboin & Doly (1979). Results: Aeromonas species were isolated from 84.2% of the studied environments, according to data trom CETESB, 58.3% of samples presented favorable water quality conditions, and 43,2% of isolated strains had at least one plasmid. Conclusions: It was observed that these organisrns are widely distributed in the aquatic environrnents studied, and have diverse plasmidial profiles. Organisrns isolated from these environrnents my pose a risk to public health.
