Os pombos urbanos, Columba livia domestica, têm sido considerados reservatórios de agentes infecciosos e parasitários. A deposição de seus excretas pode causar contaminações do ambiente e de produtos alimentícios para consumo humano e animal, significando um perigo do ponto de vista da Saúde Pública. O comportamento destas aves traduz hábitos de freqüentes e intensas aproximações à população, com agravante de freqüentar locais poluídos e contaminados por lixo e fezes. Realizou-se estudo com o objetivo de determinara presença de microrganismos patogênicos de relevância médica em excretas liberados pelo pombo doméstico em áreas de alimentos e em ambientes de intensa circulação de pessoas. As coletas foram realizadas em seis locais diferentes, abrangendo três locais de circulação de pessoas e três envolvendo alimentos. O Método de Faust, baseado na flutuação em solução de sulfato de zinco, foi adaptado para a realização das análises das amostras. Foram identificados sete tipos de protozoários e seis tipos de helmintos. Os protozoários não patogênicos encontrados foram considerados indicadores de qualidade sanitária, evidenciando ingestão de fezes e materiais poluídos. Os resultados demonstram que o pombo doméstico é transmissor em potencial de doenças que podem infectar ao homem, contribuindo para a distribuição e disseminação destes agentes patogênicos.

Pigeons (Columba livia domestica) have been considered reservoirs of parasites and infection vectors. The pigeons excreta can contaminate the environment and human and animal food stock which means a serious hazard in terms of Public Health. The birds behaviour include the frequent and intense contacts with people as well as visiting polluted places and contaminated by garbage and feces. The present research was aimed at determining the presence of medical important pathogens found in pigeon excreta in food plants and in areas with high circulation of people. The samples were collected in six different places including three food plants and three people circulating areas. The samples were analised using an adaptation of the Faust Method which is based on the floating in a solution of zinc phosphate. Seven different protozoa and six diverse helminthes were identified. The non pathogenic protozoa identified were considered as sanitary quality indicators showing that the domestic pigeons are potential vectors of diseases that may aftect humans and can also be intermediary hosts for parasites that live in the human organism. Pigeons contribute to the dispersal and distribution of these pathogens.
