E quase impossível de se visualizar a sociedade industrial dos dias atuais sem a existência do trabalho em turnos. Seus arranjos, apresentando uma grande va riedade de tipos,podem afetar a saúde e o comportamento dos trabalhadores e conseqUentemente devem ser estudados como um problema de saúde ocupacional. Foram examinadas as tendências atuais do trabalho em turnos em vários países e os esquemas de traba - lho mais freqUentemente adotados, em função dos ramos-industriais específicos. As razoes, bem como as vantagens e desvantagens de sua implantação, foram debatidas sob o ponto de vista técnico, social e econômico. Mencionou-se de maneira resumida a legisl~ çao brasileira referente à duração da jornada de trabalho ao trabalho noturno e ao descanso semanal obrigatório. Através de uma revisão da literatura, foram analisados os principais efeitos biológicos, aspectos médicos e sociais sobre a adaptação do trabalhador a diversos esque - mas de trabalho em turnos. Foram apresentados critSrios e recomendaçoes para organizaç5o do trabilho em turnos a fim de conciliar as necessidades do trabalhador c da indústria.

Nowadays an industrial society is conceivable without shift work. vi i hardly Its arrangements, displaying a wide range of variations, affects worker's health and behavior, and have to be studied as an occupational health problem. The current trend of the shift work in the severa! countries, the most frequently adapted work schedules by the peculiar industrial branches, as well as the reasons, advantages and disadvantages of their implementation were discussed from technical, social and economical points of view. A brief presentation of the Brazilian law, regulating the number of working hours per day, the night work and the mandatory weekly rest, was included. Through a review of the existing studies , effects of the main biological, medicai, and social factors upon worker's adaptation to different shift work schedules , were analysed. Criteria and recommandation for suitable work shift schedules to conciliate the needs of both worker and industry were presented.
